Ebeneezer Goode is–say it with me kids–a fun song. It’s got a great beat and you can dance to it. And it’s fun. Really fun. F to the U to the N.

Okay, enough self-parody. This is a good (no pun intended) song. It’s got a good, upbeat feeling, and it’s enjoyable to listen to as well.

I’d never really considered what the song was about before (I preferfed to just let my butt do thinking when I listen to this one), but according to Wikipedia, it’s most likely about the drug ecstasy:

The song is best known for its chorus, “‘Eezer Goode, ‘Eezer Goode/He’s Ebeneezer Goode”, which has been construed as a drug reference: “E’s are good, E’s are good”.[1] The lyrics present the advantages of Ecstasy use with a warning about the drugs abuse thrown in: “But go easy on old ‘Eezer, he’s the love you could lose. Extraordinary fellow, like Mister Punchinello, he’s the kind of geezer who must never be abused”.

The song also contains references to rolling a spliff with the lines “Has anybody got any Veras?”, a reference to ‘Vera Lynns’, the rhyming slang for skins or rolling papers and “Got any salmon?”, which is a reference to ’salmon and trout’ the rhyming slang for ’snout’, a prison word for tobacco.

The first time I heard this song, I thought it would be the perfect backing music for the mutant gang from The Dark Knight Returns. It’s loud–very loud–angry, energetic and over the top. Plus there’s really nothing else that sounds like it, at least not that I’ve heard.

The song’s meaning is pretty self-explanatory–it’s about rejecting the system and creating something better. Well, maybe not better, but something different. Either way, I find the song and it’s sound compelling.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything like Atari Teenage Riot. Pure sonic attack, eardrum bleeding drum machines, a sound that I simply haven’t heard before or since.

Too Dead For Me is one of those songs that typifies the band. Angry, rebellious, and totally disenchanted, there will always be–there should always be–room for bands who politicize things, that ask questions, that reject pat answers.

Oh yeah, it’s a cool sounding song, at least to me. May not be to eveyrone’s tastes, but I dig it.

This isn’t always quite my style, but I do enjoy this song. I don’t know if there’s any meaning behind it, but it’s got a good beat and you can dance to it.

Homosapien was a great song at the time. It’s got a nice techno sound to it, and Shelley’s plainly bisexual lyrics gave it a bit of a feeling of a coming out song. Plus it sounds great in a club.

In 1981, Shelley released his first solo single, the song “Homosapien”, which had originally been written for the next Buzzcocks LP. On this recording he returned to his original interests in electronic music and shifted emphasis from guitar to synthesizer. The song was banned by the BBC for “explicit reference to gay sex”, which didn’t stop it from becoming enormously popular in dance clubs in Europe and North America. At this time, Pete Shelley also talked about his bisexuality,[2] which had been implicit in many of the Buzzcocks songs he had written but now came to attention due to “Homosapien” and the BBC ban.

Elastica was best known for their hit single Connection, but this song was from their second album. It’s got a really interesting beat and sound, likely due to Justine Frischmann playing around with Cubase, and in my opinion it’s one of those songs that grows on you with each listen.

Bran Van 3000’s Couch Surfer is an hilarious song about a house guest who’s overstayed his welcome pretty much everywhere. And how many songs do you know that have a kazoo solo? I like the simple, understated beat a lot too.

Jane Jensen’s Luv Song is a fun little ode to the perfect boyfriend–at least as defined by Jan Jensen. It’s a cool song: Jane’s occasionally atonal vocals, charming spoken word bits, and a nifty beat make this song a lot of fun to listen to.
