Nirvana - Very Ape

Nirvana

Very Ape is likely not the first song you think of when you think of Nirvana (likely not second, third, forth, fifth, etc.), but it’s one of my favorite Nirvana songs. A raw condemnation of stupidity and ignorance and selfishness and the recognition of those qualities within himself, Kurt Cobain delivers a sardonic vocal while the guitars and drums just rage forward. A great song, albeit a short one.

And of course, the lyrics:

I am buried up to my neck in
Contradictionary flies
I take pride as the king of illiterature
I’m very ape and very nice

If you ever need anything please don’t
Hesitate to ask someone else first
I’m too busy acting like I’m not naive
I’ve seen it all, I was here first

Out of the ground
Into the sky
Out of the sky
Into the dirt

If you ever need anything please don’t
Hesitate to ask someone else first
I’m too busy acting like I’m not naive
I’ve seen it all, I was here first

Out of the ground
Into the sky
Out of the sky
Into the ground

Out of the ground
Into the sky
Out of the sky
Into the dirt

Camper Van Beethoven - (I Was Born In A) Laundromat
Posted by Randy Jackson at 12:00 am in Rock, grunge

Camper Van Beethoven

This one is just a cool, fun song. It’s got a great hook, a cool melody, and a great rocking sound. It’s your basic anthem, about being poor and bored and not having anything to do.

And of course, the lyrics:

Down here on the north side
I’m rattling with a tin
Down here on the river boat
I got sand in my shoes

It’s hotter than asphalt
It’s harder than pistols
I’m as bent as a crowbar
We all want some release

Just like the queen of the trailer park
Sometimes she’s the queen of the water, of the river

Down here on the tracks
We’re the kings of the trash
I was born in a laundromat
I was born in a cul-de-sac

And some of us are brown
And some of us are white
Just give me some tension release
Just give me some tension release

Just like the queen of the trailer park
Sometimes she’s the queen of the water, of the river

Down here on the tracks
We’re the kings of the trash
She’s the queen of the primo
She’s the queen of the bondo

And I was born in a laundromat
I was born in a cul-de-sac
Just give me some tension release
Just give me some tension release

Just like the queen of the trailer park
Sometimes she’s the queen of the water, of the river

Hole - She Walks On Me
Posted by Randy Jackson at 12:00 am in Punk, Rock, grunge

HoleOkay, I have next to no information about this song, nor do I have any really good understanding of what it means. If anyone has any ideas, please feel free to comment. I do know that it rocks. I guess that’s enough, right?

And of course, the lyrics:

Geeks do not have pedigrees
Or perfect punk-rock resumes
Or anorexic magazines
It smells like girl, it smells like girl
She walks over me
She walks over me
Hold you close like we both died
My ever pressing suicide
My stupid fuck, my blushing bride
Oh, tear my heart out, tear my heart out
She walks over me
She walks over me
I shut my mouth with
I gotta use the rest for
Yeah, I gotta shut my mouth with
I gotta use the rest of you
Daddy, Daddy
Please come here
Don’t you touch me, don’t you dare
We look the same, we talk the same, we are the same, we are the same
She walks over me
She walks over me
I shut my mouth with
I gotta use the rest
Yeah, I gotta shut my mouth with
I gotta use the rest of you
Now you see she walks the same
And now you see she talks the same
You never know what you will get
You never know what you’ll forget
She walks over me
She walks over me

Alice In Chains - Would?
Posted by Randy Jackson at 12:00 am in Dark, Rock, grunge

Alice In ChainsThis is just a cool song. I love the bass line, and the slashing guitars make a nice contrast. Good vocals as well.

I found the following information on Wikipedia:

The song, written by guitar/vocalist Jerry Cantrell, concerns the late lead singer of Mother Love Bone, Andrew Wood, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990. It is one of the band’s best-known songs.

This first appeared on the soundtrack to the 1992 movie Singles, in which the members of Alice in Chains make a cameo appearance.

Jerry Cantrell on the song, from the liner notes of 1999’s Music Bank box set collection:

“I was thinking a lot about Andrew Wood (Mother Love Bone frontman) at the time. We always had a great time when we did hang out, much like Chris Cornell and I do. There was never really a serious moment or conversation, it was all fun. Andy was a hilarious guy, full of life and it was really sad to lose him. But I always hate people who judge the decisions others make. So it was also directed towards people who pass judgments.”

Here’s a link to the video

And of course, the lyrics:

Know me broken by my master
Teach thee on child of love hereafter

Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way

Drifting body it’s sole desertion
Flying not yet quite the notion

Am I wrong?
Have I run to far to get home
Have I gone?
And left you here alone
If I would, could you?
