I think the best thing I can say about this song is that no matter how many times I’ve heard it, I still love it. It’s a great pop song, very catchy, great chorus, easy to sing along to, just fun. I personally always enjoyed Blink 182 for what they were: a pop band that had co-opted a punk sound and made it work. The songs are good, and that’s what matters.
From Wikipedia
Tom DeLonge was inspired to write the song after Tom’s then girlfriend, and now wife, complained that he had written many songs about all the other girls he had known in his life, but none about her. The line in the song “she left me roses by the stairs/ surprises let me know she cares” references an actual incident where Tom came home late one night and had been left flowers by his girlfriend.
And of course, the lyrics:
All the, small things
True care, truth brings
I’ll take, one lift
Your ride, best trip
Always, I know
You’ll be at my show
Watching, waiting,
commiserating
Say it ain’t so, I will not go,
turn the lights off, carry me home
Na, na…
Late night, come home
Work sucks, I know
She left me roses by the stairs,
surprises let me know she cares
Say it ain’t so, I will not go,
turn the lights off, carry me home
Na, na…
Say it ain’t so, I will not go,
turn the lights off, carry me home
Keep your head still, I’ll be your thrill,
the night will go on, my little windmill
Say it ain’t so, I will not go, (Na, na…)
turn the lights off, carry me home (Na, na…)
Keep your head still, I’ll be your thrill, (Na, na…)
the night will go on, the night will go on, (Na, na…)
my little windmill
Walk Like An Egyptian is one of those songs that you probably like in spite of yourself. It’s one of those insidious tunes that worms it’s way into your brain and sets up shop there. Still, you enjoy the ride. It’s got a great rhythm and a great melody, and it’s just fun.
From Wikipedia:
Liam Sternberg wrote the song after seeing people on a ferry walking awkwardly to keep their balance, which reminded him of figures in Ancient Egyptian reliefs. The opening lyrics state, “All the old paintings on the tombs/They do the sand dance don’t you know”. The reference to the sand dance possibly refers to a music hall routine performed by Wilson, Keppel and Betty where Wilson and Keppel danced around in the postures portrayed on the reliefs wearing the fez while Betty watched. The music video for “Walk Like an Egyptian” similarly featured people dancing in such a pose.
And of course, the lyrics:
All the old paintings on the tomb
They do the sand dance doncha know
If they move too quick (oh whey oh)
They’re falling down like a domino
And the bazaar man by the Nile
He got the money on a bet
All the crocodiles (oh whey oh)
They snap their teeth on your cigarette
Foreign types with the hookah pipes say
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Walk like an Egyptian
The blonde waitresses take their trays
They spin around and they cross the floor
They’ve got the moves (oh whey oh)
You drop your drink then they bring you more
All the school kids so sick of books
They like the punk and the metal band
When the buzzer rings (oh whey oh)
They’re walking like an Egyptian
All the kids in the marketplace say
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Walk like an Egyptian
Slide feet up street bend your back
Shift your arm then you pull it back
Life[’s] hard you know (oh whey oh)
So strike a pose on a Cadillac
If you want to find all the cops
They’re hanging out in the donut shop
They sing and dance (oh whey oh)
They spin the club, cruise down the block
All the Japanese with their yen
The party boys call the Kremlin
And the Chinese know (oh whey oh)
They walk the line like Egyptian
All the cops in the donut shop say
Ay oh whey oh, ay oh whey oh
Walk like an Egyptian
Walk like an Egyptian
The last thing I ever expected to hear from the Clash was unabashed bubblegum pop, but here you go.
1-2, Crush On You is a great song, but it definitely sounds much more Bay City Rollers than the Only Band that Matters. It’s a very fun, very hummable tune, with tongue-in-cheek, sweet lyrics about a young lad having a crush on a girl. It’s just a fun song, and the thing that makes it stand out is that it’s by the Clash.
Someone made a video for this song using footage from Lost
And of course, the lyrics(courtesy of London’s Burning):
STANDING IN A QUEUE OF A SCHOOL CANTEEN
GUYS ON THE CORNER THEY WERE LAUGHIN’ AT ME
BUT I DON’T MIND IF THEY SEE IT ALL
YOU KNOW I GOTTA COME CLEAN
I GOTTA COME CLEAN
I GOT A CRUSH ON YOU
MY MIND DON’T NEED IT BUT MY BODY DO
A LITTLE BIT OF LOVING AND ATTENTION FOR YOU
ALTHOUGH WE’RE ONLY STRANGERS
THEY DON’T NEED TO KNOW
I GOTTA CUM CLEAN, I GOTTA CUM CLEAN
OOH, I GOT A CRUSH ON YOU
I WANNA GET SERIOUS RIGHT AWAY
1-2, I GOT A CRUSH ON YOU
WHAT YOU DOIN’ TODAY OR ANY OTHER DAY?
1-2, I GOT A CRUSH ON YOU
JUST ONE LOOK AND I GO INSANE
1-2, I GOT A CRUSH ON YOU
YOUR DADDY NEVER COMES TO GET YOU
`COS LIVES SO FAR AWAY
BUT HIS I-TALIAN CHAUFFEUR SHOWS UP EVERY DAY
BUT I’LL GET YOU IN THE CORNER, I’LL GET YOU ALL
ALONE
I GOTTA CUM CLEAN, I GOTTA COME CLEAN
I GOT A CRUSH ON YOU
1-2, I GOT A CRUSH ON YOU
1-2, I GOT A CRUSH ON YOU
1-2, I GOT A CRUSH ON YOU
I SAID 1-2
I GOT A CRUSH ON YOU
WHY SHOULD I GET A CRUSH ON YET?
327 viewsSome songs can justify a lot of analysis, deep thought and meaningful interpretation.
This isn’t one of them.
This is just good old bubblegum-euro-disco-silliness with a great hook. Turn your brain off and enjoy it for what it is, and you’ll be happier.
However, if you do want to know more:
And of course, the lyrics:
Hi Barbie
Hi Ken!
Do you wanna go for a ride?
Sure Ken!
Jump In…
I’m a barbie girl, in the barbie world
Life in plastic, it’s fantastic!
you can brush my hair, undress me everywhere
Imagination, life is your creation
Come on Barbie, let’s go party!
I’m a barbie girl, in the barbie world
Life in plastic, it’s fantastic!
you can brush my hair, undress me everywhere
Imagination, life is your creation
I’m a blond bimbo girl, in the fantasy world
Dress me up, make it tight, I’m your dolly
You’re my doll, rock’n'roll, feel the glamour in pink,
kiss me here, touch me there, hanky panky…
You can touch, you can play, if you say: “I’m always yours”
(uu-oooh-u)
I’m a barbie girl, in the barbie world
Life in plastic, it’s fantastic!
you can brush my hair, undress me everywhere
Imagination, life is your creation
Come on Barbie, let’s go party!
(Ah-ah-ah-yeah)
Come on Barbie, let’s go party!
(uu-oooh-u)
Come on Barbie, let’s go party!
(Ah-ah-ah-yeah)
Come on Barbie, let’s go party!
(uu-oooh-u)
Make me walk, make me talk, do whatever you please
I can act like a star, I can beg on my knees
Come jump in, bimbo friend, let us do it again,
hit the town, fool around, let’s go party
You can touch, you can play, if you say: “I’m always yours”
You can touch, you can play, if you say: “I’m always yours”
Come on Barbie, let’s go party!
(Ah-ah-ah-yeah)
Come on Barbie, let’s go party!
(uu-oooh-u)
Come on Barbie, let’s go party!
(Ah-ah-ah-yeah)
Come on Barbie, let’s go party!
(uu-oooh-u)
I’m a barbie girl, in the barbie world
Life in plastic, it’s fantastic!
you can brush my hair, undress me everywhere
Imagination, life is your creation
I’m a barbie girl, in the barbie world
Life in plastic, it’s fantastic!
you can brush my hair, undress me everywhere
Imagination, life is your creation

Come on Barbie, let’s go party!
(uu-oooh-u)
Oh, I’m having so much fun!
Well Barbie, we’re just getting started
Oh, I love you Ken!
The Monks were a band that was formed by several former members of the Strawbs. This album came out in 1979 and featured a sound I like to call “bubblegum punk”. The songs were crisp, well-executed pop songs, but with a punk edge and a humorous tone.
From Wikipedia:
The song “Love in Stereo” has at times been embraced as something of a theme song by the polyamory movement. However, it may be debated whether the meaning actually refers to one man in love with two women or one man in love with one woman whose wants and habits change a lot from moment to moment.
Personally, I just think it’s a really well-done song.
And of course, the lyrics:
Why am I in love in stereo
with a girl on either side
you might well look on and envy me
but this feelin` isn`t so hi-fi
Just a boy in love in stereo
when we dance it`s not much fun
I can`t choose `cause they`re identical
and I can`t move without the other one
One wants to stay at home the other wants the night out
One wants to read in bed the other wants the light out
I really don`t know what to do `cause I`m in love with you…
and you…and you
Why am I in love in stereo
where to start, I can`t decide
`cause makin` love is two dimentional
and I`m much more a mono man inside
Now that I`m in love in stereo
There`s one thing I can`t deny
oo when we kiss, we reach hi frequency
but I prefer the reproduction side
One wants to stay at home the other wants the night out
one wants to read in bed the other wants the light out
one wants to marry me the other wants to break up
one wants to call it off the other wants to make up
I really don`t know what to do, `cause I`m in love with you…
and you, and you.
Why am I, in love in stereo
Oo why am I, in love in stereo
I said why am I in love in stereo
why am I in love in stereo
why am I in love in stereo
If you aren’t tapping your toes by the end of this song…well, phooey on you.
I first encountered this song on the MV-3 show hosted by Richard Blade when I was in high school. I was immediately taken by it; it reminded me exactly of the songs I grew up with in the late 60’s-early 70’s, sort of like the Archies but with a little more substance. Just a great pop song, and I’m amazed that it wasn’t a huge hit worldwide (it did pretty good in New Zealand).
And of course, the lyrics:
Look at the sunrise
I look at it burn
I look into your eyes
Don’t know where to turn
I’m gonna drift into that void
I’m flying through space, I’m an asteroid
Time doesn’t take place when you’re paranoid
I’m thinking about you, and nothing else
Thinking about you, you’re thinking about me
Thinking about you, I’m counting the beat
Thinking about you
Thinking about me
Thinking about just you and me, la da de de, there ain’t no place I’d rather be
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh!
I’m bleeding to death
On a cloudless day
A three, a four heartbeat
A waltzin’ away…
Oooh ooh, oo oo
Oooh ooh, oo oo
Oooh ooh, oo oo
Oooh ooh, oo oo
I’m counting the beat 2 3 4 5, I’m feeling the heat to be alive
I’m counting the beat 6 7 8 9, I’m wishing that you,
That you were mine
Thinking about you, you’re thinking about me
Thinking about you and counting the beat
Thinking about you
Thinking about me
Thinking about you…
Thinking about me…
Thinking about you…..
Thinking about,
Just you and me, la da de de, there ain’t no place I’d rather be
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da
La da de da, la da de da, la da de da, la da de da

I first saw the video for this song in the mid-Eighties on MTV. Once more, and I rushed out to buy the 45.
There’s nothing deep about this one, just a doggoned good pop song. Very hummable, very listenable, and as far as I’m concerned, it still stands up well today.
Here’s a link to the video (love the spray painting of the boots)
And of course, the lyrics:
That’s what my heart yearns for now - love and pride.
That’s what my heart yearns for now - love and pride.
Start your journey early or maybe later
get your boots on
Look for rainbows
it’s cloudy
Take your hairdryer
blow them all away.
In you I’ve found a story I want to keep hearing.
In you I see all colours
not just black or white.
In you I find a reason and hope for all dreamers
You are my fill
you’re my supply of love and pride.
That’s what my heart yearns for now - love and pride. . . .
Knowing
sensing
seeing
eating
sleeping
that’s just being.
Touching
testing
loving
wanting and taking
more love and more pride.
In you I’ve found a story I want to keep hearing. . . .
I’m taking it round the world - some love and pride.
That’s what my heart yearns for now - love and pride. . . .
That’s what my heart yeanis for now - love and pride. . . .
This was a pleasant little 80’s ditty by the JoBoxers. Here’s a brief description from their official site:
The JoBoxers appeared on the music scene in 1982 as a live band of musicians at a time when British music was mostly production-driven. A natural club sound, based on driving bass (Chris Bostock), jazz-style guitar (Robert Marche), strident piano (Dave Collard) and rock-steady drums (Sean McLusky), was enhanced by a no-nonsense singing style by group wordsmith Dig Wayne.
JoBoxers music was revitalized in 2005 as a result of their hit Just Got Lucky being featured in the movie The 40 Year Old Virgin and again in 2006, as the opening track for the movie ‘Just My Luck’ featuring Lindsay Lohan.
This particular tune is a frothy piece of well-crafted pop music, with a nice 60’s style R&B vibe. It’s tremendously listenable, and still stands up today.
Here’s the lyrics:
Your technique it leaves me weak
My heart knows it’s the beat I seek
And I found it
just got lucky - yes
I found it
just got lucky.
I never worry that your love is fake
I’m free and easy and I’m feeling jake
’cause
I found it
just got lucky
Oh boy
I found it
just got lucky
’cause I newver felt this way before
Like a dog always beggin’ for more.
I’ve been fooled by love so many times.
I gave up on all the silly rhymes.
Kept my feelings all inside my heart
A locked door
no key was cut that was the fit
Now I’m such a very lucky guy.
Gangway
on side now
come on
hear me say:
We found the answer and it’s plain to see - come on hear me say
That I’m for you and you’re for me
’cause we found it
just got lucky
Together we found it
just got lucky.
I feel a quiver every time we kiss
The sky’s the limit with a love like this
’cause we’ve found it
just got lucky
Together we found it
just got lucky
’cause I never felt this way before
Like a dog always beggin’ for more.
I’ve been fooled by love so many times. . . .
We found the answer and it’s plain to see - come on hear me say. .
I feel a quiver every time we kiss. . .
I’ve been fooled by love so many times. . . .
Come on hear me say
come on hear me say
Just got lucky
just got lucky
Your technique it leaves me weak
My heart knows it’s the beat I seek
And I found it
just got lucky -
Oh boy
I found it
just got lucky
’cause I never felt this way before.
Just got lucky
just got lucky
just got lucky
