The Smiths

This song is so charming in so many ways. It’s easy to get lost in the “If it’s not love, then it’s the bomb that will bring us together”, but really there’s so much more than that. As someone who is shy personally, I really identify with this song (and many other songs by the Smiths about loneliness). Being fearfully afraid to pull the trigger, scared to have any emotional outlets with someone physically available to you, I understand it all.

However, more than anything, this song is a celebration of the power of love, and in that it’s wonderful. Also, terribly catchy.

Here’s a link to the video (love the video by the way. It’s a perfect counterpoint to the seemingly dark lyrics)

And of course, the lyrics:

Shyness is nice, but shyness can stop you
From doing all the things in life that you’d like to
So, if there’s something you’d like to try
If there’s something you’d like to try
Ask me, I won’t say no (how could I?)

Coyness is nice, but coyness can stop you
From saying all the things in life you’d like to
So, if there’s something you’d like to try
If there’s something you’d like to try
Ask me, I won’t say no (how could I?)

Spending warm summer days indoors
Writing frightening verse
To a buck-toothed girl in Luxembourg

Ask me, ask me, ask me
Ask me, ask me, ask me

Because if it’s not love, then it’s the bomb
That will bring us together

Nature is a language, can’t you read?
Nature is a language, can’t you read?

So ask me, ask me, ask me
Ask me, ask me, ask me

Because if it’s not love, then it’s the bomb
That will bring us together…
