I just love this song. Love and adore it.
I really don’t know why Roxy Music aren’t in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. They were very influential (ask Duran Duran), had a goodly number of top 40 hits, and were just plain cool.
This song starts out at a frenetic pace that any rock band would be hard-pressed to imitate or appropriate, then suddenly winds into one of the coolest love ballads you’ll ever hear. Additionally, Bryan Ferry’s tortured ‘Oh Mother of Pearl, I wouldn’t trade you for another girl’ at the ending just sends shivers down my spine. Great, great song.
And of course, the lyrics:
Turn the lights down
Way down low
Turn up the music
Hi as fi can go
All the gang´s here
Everyone you know
It´s a crazy scene
Hey there just look over your shoulder
Get the picture?
No no no no …….(yes)
Walk a tightrope
Your life-sign-line
Such a bright hope
Right place, right time
What´s your number?
Never you mind
Take a powder
But hang on a minute what´s coming round the corner?
Have you a future?
No no no no …….(yes)
Well i´ve been up all night again
Party-time wasting is too much fun
Then I step back thinking
Of life´s inner meaning
And my latest fling
It´s the same old story
All love and glory
It´s a pantomime
If youre looking for love
In a looking glass world
Its pretty hard to find
Oh mother of pearl
I wouldnt trade you
For another girl
Divine intervention
Always my intention
So I take my time
I´ve been looking for something
Ive always wanted
But was never mine
But now Ive seen that something
Just out of reach - glowing -
Very holy grail
Oh mother of pearl
Lustrous lady
Of a sacred world
Thus: even zarathustra
Another-time-loser
Could believe in you
With every goddess a let down
Every idol a bring down
It gets you down
But the search for perfection
Your own predilection
Goes on and on and on and on
Canadian club love
A place in the country
Everyones ideal
But you are my favorita
And a place in your heart dear
Makes me feel more real
Oh mother of pearl
I wouldnt change you
For the whole world
Youre highbrow, holy
With lots of soul
Melancholy shimmering
Serpentine sleekness
Was always my weakness
Like a simple tune
But no dilettante
Filigree fancy
Beats the plastic you
Career girl cover
Exposed and another
Slips right into-view
Oh looking for love
In a looking glass world
Is pretty hard for you
Few throwaway kisses
The boomerang misses
Spin round and round
Fall on featherbed quilted
Faced with silk
Softly stuffed eider down
Take refuge in pleasure
Just give me your future
Well forget your past
Oh mother of pearl
Submarine lover
In a shrinking world
Oh lonely dreamer
Your choker provokes
A picture cameo
Oh mother of pearl
So so semi-precious
In your detached world
Oh mother of pearl
I wouldn´t trade you
For another girl
This has long been one of my favorite Devo songs. I very much enjoy the steady beat, the simple hooks, the little synth-melodies from time to time–it just works. Great song.
And of course, the lyrics:
Left home with a friend of mine
Gone two years and i don’t know why
Now i’m happy all the time
I can’t think and i’m feelin’ fine
Girl put me in a situation
Going through soft core mutation
Think you heard this all before
Now you’re gonna hear some more
I know a place where dreams get crushed
Hopes are smashed but that ain’t much
Voluntary experimentation
Going through soft core mutation
I’m going under
Down under where the lights are low
To a place where all the mutants go
Doing things i never did before
Inside out and coming back for more
Little girls with the four red lips
Never knew it could be like this
You put me in a situation
Goin’ through soft core mutation

This was the first song I ever heard by 311, and it’s just a fun, cool, move your hips song. I could try to analyze it, but there’s no point. It’s not deep. It’s just a feel-good song.
And of course, the lyrics:
Passin’ the kind buds.
Kickin’ back in the sand in the sun.
To be alive is lovin’.
Where the shore meets the sea.
Man I’m hummin’ I’m hummin
I’m free as I stare at the sea.
And I’m not comin’ down.
The world is yours once you have found.
The good is to share.
Which is elsewhere.
[1]
The beauty of green is where light is now broken by what it touches.
Remembering what you once had told me hit home.
And hasn’t it always been so.
[Chorus:]
I’m free as I stare at the sea.
And I’m not comin’ down.
The world is yours once you have found.
The good is to share.
Which is elsewhere.
Like I said before I’ll say it once more.
Knew you would make me feel so good.
Wanna do you right.
Can’t get enough.
This is the stuff
life’s about and it trips me out.
Wanna do you right.
Bright mornings, days when I want so much.
I want nothing, just this life and no more.
I’ll come within this world
there’s only one for me.
She’s waiting, I’ll soon come.
[Chorus]
Free from the burn the burn that helps spite and
Free from the burn now baby dib your price
No buzz hack, no buzz hack
No buzz hack, no buzz hack
Swing the thing you bring check it out
How could you be so good to me
How could you be so good to me I want to be worth I want to be worth
Buzz hack hack hack buzz
Yea swing to the thing you bring
Check it out
Like I said before I’ll say it once more.
Knew you would make me feel so good.
Wanna do you right.
Can’t get enough.
This is the stuff life’s about and it trips me out.
Wanna do you right.
The Rod Stewart version is probably better known, but I really prefer Robert Palmer’s version of this song. While Stewart’s voice lends itself well to blues, I think Palmer’s voice fits the song better–plus he definitely has more interesting vocals.
And of course, the lyrics:
Some guys have all the luck
Some guys have all the fun
Some guys have all the luck all the luck
What you gonna do when your luck begins to run
Such a lucky dog it’s good luck - push it
I get turned on by everything you do to me
Don’t say you shouldn’t do that
Push your hard luck hard push it
Oh, to take a kiss from lady luck tonight
Oh yeah I want to so much
Ooh the way it feels when you find out
there’s a pearl in it
Girl the way it feels when you get it
Some guys have all the luck
Some guys get all the fun
I get to hear you talk, see you walk
Ooh take me in your arms and let your luck
begin to run
I touch you - alright
I thought my luck had held until you fingered me
We make a right impression when you hold me tight
Wait for a break, my lucky charm
Things are looking up alright - alright
Oh - to taste the lips of lady luck tonight
Oh yeah - I want to - so much
Ooh the it it feels when you find out
there’s a pearl in it
Girl the way you squeal when you get it
Some guys have all the luck
Some guys get all the breaks
I get to roll my dice - ain’t it nice
Ooh take me in your kitchen and we’ll play
for higher stakes
Some guys have all the luck
Some guys get all the fun
I get to hear you talk, see you walk
Ooh take me in your arms and let your luck
begin to run
I honestly don’t know much about this band, although I did buy their CD Surgery For Zebra years ago. I believe they are Swedish or Danish or from some Scandinavian country.
This song isn’t really for everyone, I don’t think. It took a little time for it to grow on me, but now I love it. I like the herky-jerky guitar sounds, the likely meaningless lyrics, and the steady beat. It’s just cool.
And of course, the lyrics:
Orange can be hard, sometimes she knows
Orange is the way the summer blows
Orange can be hard, orange can be hard, sometimes she knows
Transty can also love alone
Oranges can be hard, orange can be smart
Orange is the way the summer blows
Other fruits say oranges are blind
Still they get to slip into your mind
Orange are smart, orange can be hard, sometimes she knows
Transty can also love a lost
Orange can be hard, orange can be smart
Orange is the way the summer blows
Oranges are green
Have you seen, have you seen them climbing up the trees
Drifting, smiling, raving and still laughing, told the buzzing honeybees
In the trees they get your tv, years and different torrens factories, not me
Trapped into the garden they get caught up watching football on tv, tv
Orange can be hard, sometimes she knows
Transty can also love alone
Orange can be hard, orange can be smart
Orange is the way the summer blows
In my opinion, this is the quintessential B-52’s song. It’s not the most popular, but I think it’s the most fun. It’s got a great guitar sound, some lyrics that are both poignant and hilarious(Why don’t you dance with me?/I’m not no limburger is the sort of thing I think many people have wondered over the years, although probably not with that particular verbiage), and, well, it’s just plain fun!
Here’s a clip of the band performing the song on a late seventies late night sketch comedy show that shall remain nameless. I remember seeing this back then and being entranced.
And of course, the lyrics:
Remember when you held my hand
Remember when you were my man
Walk talk in the name of love
Before you break my heart
Think it over, think it over
Roll it over in your mind
Why don’t you dance with me
I’m not no Limburger
Just a limburger
Dance this mess around
Dance this mess around, ’round, ’round
Everybody goes to parties
They dance this mess around
They do the Shu-ga-loo
Do the Shy Tuna
Do the Camel Walk
Do the Hip-o-crit
Ah-Hippy Hippy forward Hippy Hippy
Hippy Shake, Hippy Shake
Oh-it’s time to do ‘em right
Hey now, don’t that make you feel a whole lot better?
Huh?
I say, don’t that make you feel a whole lot better
What you say?
I’m just askin’
Shake-Bake-Shake-Bake
Everybody goes to parties
They dance this mess around
They do all 16 dances
Do the Coo-ca-choo
Do the Aqua-velva
Do the Dirty Dog
Do the Escalator
Ah-Hippy Hippy forward Hippy Hippy
Hippy Shake, Hippy Shake
It’s time to do ‘em right
Hey! Fred, now don’t that make you feel a whole lot better now?
Huh?
Say, don’t that make you feel a whole lot better?
What you say?
I’m just askin’
Yeah, yeah, yeah…
Stop!
Dance on over
Yeah, yeah
Dance, dance, dance this mess around
Dance this mess around
Shake, shake-a-bake shake
Shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
Dance this mess around
Yeah, yeah, yeah……..

This is just a cool song. I love the Eastern synthesizer sounds, and it’s got a great beat and you can dance to it. Don’t need to have much more.
And of course, the lyrics:
You keep me running round and round
Well, that’s alright with me
Up and down, I’m up the wall, I’m up the bloody tree
That’s alright with me, yeah, that’s alright with me
Well, it feels alright to me, yeah, it looks alright to me
And I’m so tall, I’m so tall
You raise me and then you let me fall
I’m so small, I’m so small
Wrap me round your finger, see me fall
Here we go
You keep me running round and round
Well, that’s alright with me
Nothing, nothing, nothing’s going to step in my way
Living on the ceiling, no more room down there
Things fall into place, you get the joke, fall into place
And I’m so tall, I’m so tall
You raise me and then you let me fall
I’m so small, I’m so small
Wrap me round your finger, see me fall
Here we go
You keep me running round and round
Well, that’s alright with me
Up and down, I’m up the wall, I’m up the bloody tree
Hiding from your questions, questions you won’t ask
Why am I up the tree, you say? Why are you down there, I say?
I’m so tall, I’m so tall
You raise me and then you let me fall
I’m so small, I’m so small
Wrap me round your finger, see me fall
I say
There are several reasons I’ve enjoyed the work of the Wu-Tang Clan over the years. They aren’t afraid to take risks musically (whether they work or not), each member brings a different style (some better than others)–whether in terms of lyrical content or delivery or both, and when it works, it works very well. Method Man’s Bring the Pain works on so many levels it’s a thing of beauty. You have the fairly unique beat driving the song, Method Man’s delivery, and lyrics that are occasionally hilarious (Rhymes be the proof while I’m drinkin 90 proof/ Huh vodka, no OJ, no straw/ When you give it to me aiy/ give it to me raw/ I’ve learned when you drink Absolut straight it burns/ Enough to give my chest hairs a perm).
Some more facts about the song from Wikipedia:
“Bring the Pain” is a song recorded by the rap artist Method Man. It was the first single released from his debut album Tical. Comedian Chris Rock named his 1996 tour and television special “Bring the Pain” after this song. Method Man is credited in the special’s closing credits. Industrial music band Mindless Self Indulgence covered it for their single “Bring the Pain/Tornado”, and on their now out of print debut album, Tight. The beat was sampled by Timbaland for a song of the same name on Missy Elliott’s Under Construction, which features Method Man. This single has been hailed a classic by many Wu- Tang fans because of its dark and reggae- influenced beat and because of Method Man’s strong lyricism. The opening bar (I came to bring the pain/ Hardcore from the brain/ Lets go inside my astral plane) has been deemed a classic line my many die- hard Wu-Tang fans. Also, Tupac showed his support for Wu-Tang by sampling this opening line on his 1996 classic All Eyez on Me on the track No More Pain.
And of course, the lyrics:
Basically, can’t fuck with me
[Verse One:]
I came to bring the pain hardcore from the brain
Let’s go inside my astral plane
Find out my mental’s based on instrumental
records hey, so I can write monumental
Methods, I’m not the King
But niggaz is decaf I stick em for the CREAM
check it, just how deep can shit get
Deep as the abyss and brothers is mad fish accept it
In your Cross Colour, clothes you’ve crossed over
Then got Totally Krossed Out and Kris Kross
Who da boss? Niggaz get tossed to the side
And I’m the dark side of the Force
Of course it’s the Method, Man from the Wu-Tang Clan
I be hectic, and comin for the head piece protect it
Fuck it, two tears in a bucket, niggaz want the ruckus
Bustin at me bruh, now bust it
Styles, I gets buckwild
Method Man on some shit, pullin niggaz files
I’m sick, insane, crazy, Drivin Miss Daisy
Out her fuckin mind now I got mine I’m Swayze
[Chorus:]
Is it real son, is it really real son
Let me know it’s real son, if it’s really real
Something I could feel son, load it up and kill one
Want it raw deal son, if it’s really real
[Interlude: Booster]
And when I was a lil stereo (stereo)
I listened to some champion (champion)
I always wondered (wondered)
Will now I be the numba one? (Tical! hahaha)
Now you listen to de gargon (Gargon!)
And de gargon summary
And any man dat come test me (test me)
Me gwanna lick out dem brains (it’s like that)
[Verse Two:]
Brothers want to hang with the Meth bring the rope
the only way you hang is by the neck nigga poke
off the set comin to your projects
Take it as a threat, better yet it’s a promise
Comin from a vet on some old Vietnam shit
Nigga you can bet your bottom dollar hey I bomb shit
And it’s gonna get even worse word to God
It’s the Wu comin through sickin niggaz for they garments
Movin on your left, southpaw em it’s the Meth
Came to represent and carve my name in your chest
You can come test realize you’re no contest
Son I’m the gun that won that old Wild West
Quick on the draw with my hands on the four
nine three eleven with the rugged rhymes galore
Check it cause I think not when this hip-hops like proper
Rhymes be the proof while I’m drinkin 90 proof
Huh vodka, no OJ, no straw
When you give it to me aiy, give it to me raw
I’ve learned when you drink Absolut straight it burns
Enough to give my chest hairs a perm
I don’t need a chemical blow to pull a hoe
All I need is Chemical Bank to pay da mo’
What, basically that, Meth-Tical, ninety-four style
Word up we be hazardous *car crashing* *horn passing me*
Northern spicy brown mustard hoes
We have to stick you
[horn sound of car racing by]
[Chorus]
[Outro:]
I’ll fuckin, I’ll fuckin cut your kneecaps off
and make you kneel in some staircase piss
I’ll fuckin, cut your eyelids off
and feed you nuthin but sleepin pills
You motherfuckers
(So??) So fuck the hoe
Fuck the hoe
(Look at this nigga, this motherfuckin…)
111 viewsCompany B was one of the many mid-eighties disco bands that was pretty much formed to be disposed of at a later date. This song was their one big hit, unapologetic disco. And in all honesty, it works for what it set out to do. Quite enjoyable.
And of course, the lyrics:
I want to play with you tonight
Hold me, that’s all
That’s on my mind
Baby, something feels so right
Maybe we could play tonight
I want to be so
In love with you
I want to do just
What you want to do
I want to be all that to you
I got a dream and
You can make it true
[CHORUS]
Cause I, I’m fascinated
By your love, boy
And I’m fascinated
By your love toy
I’m fascinated by
The way you make me feel
[repeat CHORUS]
Love me until the morning light
Please me, make me feel alright
Kiss me, let me make you mine
I love it, loving you sometime
Come on, come on
I want to be with you
Come on, come on
I won’t get over you
I want to do just
What you want me to
I got a dream and
You can make it good
[repeat CHORUS 2x]
I, I’m fascinated
By your love, boy
And I’m fascinated
By your love toy
I’m fascinated by
The way you make me feel
[repeat CHORUS]
I, I’m fascinated
By your love, boy
And I’m fascinated
By your love toy
I’m fascinated by
The way you make me feel
[repeat CHORUS to fade]
101 viewsThis is a great rock song; it’s got those cool, quirky synthesizer sounds, a great beat, that fabulous ‘cheerleader’ bridge, and it just plain rocks.
I have no idea what the song is about however, and an internet search turned up zilch. Still, it’s cool. If anyone has any ideas, let ‘er rip.
I’m not that sure of the lyrics, as it’s obvious whoever wrote these down was a little unsure as well. Still, best guess, I suppose:
crease all the babies
and puff up the lady?
cause vincent come on down
the boys are ???
but the girls can tell
and they tell and they tell and they tell
slice one open for the unknown soldier
vincent come on down
